The 17th Paeroa Highland Games & Tattoo on 13th February 2010 at the Paeroa Domain features 12 hours of Scottish entertainment with plenty of activities for all the family to enjoy.
What started out as a small Pipe Bands Contest, has grown over the years, and today is a fully-fledged Highland Games complete with an evening Tattoo. Between 4000-5000 people attend each year, with visitors and competitors coming from throughout New Zealand and overseas.
This community event continues to grow each year, and is a major undertaking by a small team of dedicated volunteers who believe in putting something back into the community in which they live.
The Games commences at 8.30am with Solo Piping, this competition again being part of a tri – series event. Highland Dancing, an Axemen’s carnival and the Heavyweight athletes all attracting large crowds throughout the day.
The popular “Tartan in the Park”, a fun and fashionable Tartanwear competition, will again be held in the main arena at 5.30pm.
The Pipe Bands contest has attracted 17 Pipe Bands from the Auckland, Central North Island and Taranaki centres plus the Redlands Sporting Club Pipe Band from Brisbane Australia, and features Sets and Medleys as well as a street march.
A new event this year will be the “Black & White” dog show, a competition for Terrier dogs run by the Auckland West Highland and Scottish Terriers Clubs. The Scottish Highland cattle will again draw many interested spectators.
The Scottish Clan’s will be in attendance, with an opportunity to check out your genealogy, perhaps try Scottish food or purchase Scottish souvenirs. During the afternoon on stage in the Clan’s area will be a variety of Celtic singers and music.
The highlight for many will be the evening Tattoo, which is modelled on the famous Edinburgh Tattoo in Scotland. The Paeroa Domain will come alive at 6.30pm with this 2-½ hour family spectacular presented in front of the replica Paeroa castle. It will feature a kaleidoscope of Massed Pipe Bands, music and displays, Mace Flourishing, Ode to the Haggis, “Drambuie” Anzac Caber Challenge, Pipe Band displays, and Axemen’s relay.
